Marchionne Gives North America Priority Over Europe for Alfa Romeo's Future Plans

Fiat-Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne, announced that he will appoint a boss for the Alfa Romeobrand exclusively for the North American market. This is because the Italian carmaker’s return to the US after a 17-year absence will be his top priority, relegating Europe, in which Alfa’s sales are disappointing, to second place.

“We are going to target the US market first and work our way back to Europe”, Marchionne said in an interview with Autonews Europe. “We have run market tests on the desirability of the Alfa brand in the US and, not withstanding our long absence from the market it’s still one of the best brands in the world. I think we need to go back and grab it.”
This comes in contrast to the common industry practice of pleasing the more demanding European buyers first, with many carmakers going as far as building design centers and tuning their models’ characteristics according to European customer preferences.
Marchionne admits that Alfa Romeo remains the biggest problem he has to solve after seven years at the helm of the Fiat Group as the Italian brand’s vehicles such as the Brera, Spider, GT and 159 "failed to reflect the brand's sporty character"
Initial estimates have proved to be unrealistic: in 2006, Marchionne announced that he would double Alfa Romeo sales to 300,000 units by 2010. He missed the target by more than a…few miles: last year the company sold a mere 115,000 cars.
This forced Alfa Romeo’s CEO Harald Wester to reduce the annual target for 2011 to 155,000 units, and for 2014, when the carmaker will have implemented its brand-new plan and begins to roll out new models, to 400,000 units.
On the other hand, US Fiat dealers, who so far only have the 500 premium city car in their inventory, will be more than happy to hear that they will get Alfa Romeo, too. Chrysler Group’s head of network development, Peter Grady, has noted that the Group plans to increase its Fiat US dealership network to 150 by year’s end, from the 130 that were originally planned.

Vauxhall Introduces New Fiat-based Combo Van in Britain

Pricing for the Opel Combo's British twin that will be sold under the Vauxhall brand will start from £14,703.33 on the road (excluding VAT) for the L1H1 2000 1.3CDTI 16v (90PS) model when the new panel van goes on sale in February of 2012.
The Opel/Vauxhall Combo is the result of a partnership between GM Europe and the Fiat Group for the supply of several commercial vehicles including the Combo that is based on the Fiat Doblo. The Chrysler Group will also sell a rebadged commercial version of the Doblo in the U.S. and Canada under the Ram brand.
The Vauxhall panel van is available in two lengths (4.39m and 4.74m), two heights (1.85m and 2.10m), two gross vehicle weights (2,000kg / 4,410 lbs and 2,300kg / 5,070 lbs), two trim levels and with four diesel engine choices.
The engine range includes a 1.3-liter CDTi and a 1.6-liter CDTi, each with 90-horses as well as a 1.6 CDTi variant with 105PS and a more powerful 2.0 CDTi delivering 135PS.
The 1.3 CDTi engines are offered with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.6 CDTi and 2.0 CDTi come with a six-speed manual transmission. As an option, the 1.6 CDTi is also offered with Vauxhall’s ’Tecshift’ automated five-speed manual transmission.
Aside from the models equipped with the Tecshift transmission, all the other powertrains are offered with an available Start/Stop system that lowers fuel consumption and emissions.
Standard features across the range include remote central door locking, full-steel bulkhead, trip computer, electric power steering, driver’s airbag, ABS with EBD, CD/radio and a 12 volt power outlet in the dashboard.
The newly introduce Sportive trim level adds air conditioning, metallic paint, body-colour bumpers and door mirrors, nearside sliding door, driver seat with height adjustment, armrest and lumbar support and full wheel covers.

Romeo Ferraris Preparing Insane Fiat 500 Abarth with 300-Horses

Once upon a time, not too long ago, 300-horsepower was considered sports car territory. For example, in 1989, the BMW 850i Coupe came with a 300HP V12 under its long hood while the Ferrari 348's V8 also churned out 300HP. Heck, up until 2009, the Ford Mustang GT was powered by a 300HP V8.

Nowadays, 300HP has become something likeFive Dollar Foot-long subs with even the smallest of cars like the Fiat 500 reaching the magic output number with a little help from the tuning industry.
After the recent debut of its 260HP Fiat 500 Abarth Monza Special Edition, Italian tuning firm Romeo Ferrari is lifting the performance bar once again with the announcement of a street-legal replica of its 500 Abarth racing model (pictured above).
To be introduced this weekend, the as-of-yet unnamed replica will get a de-tuned version ofthe race car's highly-modified 360HP 1.4-liter turbocharged four-pot, delivering 300 ponies. More details are to be released after the official presentation.

Alfa Romeo Lays Out Product Plans Until 2014, Readying a New RWD Saloon with a V6 Engine

Out of all the mainstream brands included in the Fiat Group and Chrysler LLC portfolio, Alfa Romeohas the most potential to achieve a global reach and bring in some much needed cash and sales. The Italian company's boss Sergio Marchionne is well aware of this and that's one of the reasons he doesn't want to sell Alfa Romeo to Volkswagen, despite Ferdinand Piechs' persistent efforts.
However, one of the most pressing problems with Alfa Romeo is the constant delays, be that for the successors to models like the 159 series or the company's long-awaited return to the U.S. market.
Suffice it to say, there's no way of being sure that the Fiat Group has managed to sort out the time schedule-related problems when it comes to Alfa Romeo. Nevertheless, at a recent event for investors, the Fiat Group introduced an updated plan for the Milanese brand, which it hopes will revitalize Alfa Romeo through the presentation of new models.
The company's product plan calls for the introduction of two types of cars, described as "brand igniters", which refers to vehicles designed to strengthen the brand's image, and the mainstream "brand sales pillar" models to improve sales.

The first new vehicle to arrive is the carbonfiber-bodied, mid-engined 4C supercar that will also signal Alfa Romeo’s return to the US market in 2013. Although it will be a low-volume seller, the two-seater model's design and advanced technology promise to act as 21st century reminder of Alfa’s sport history and credentials.
The second model that falls under the “brand igniter” umbrella is the brand-new 2014 Spider. According to Alfa Romeo, the roadster will offer both sporty driving characteristics and distinctive styling, while its low weight construction will give it a high power-to-weight ratio.
Of much more importance to Alfa’s expansion and financial viability is the new Giulia saloon and sportwagon, which will be based on an enlarged version of the Giulietta platform. It will replace the 159 in 2014, two years later than originally planed.
Since Alfa will cease production of its current mid-size luxury model at the end of 2012, this will leave the company without a contender in the Audi A4 / BMW 3-Series segment for more than a year. The reason for this gap is that Fiat Group CEO Sergio Marchionne has reportedly rejected the Alfa Romeo styling team’s proposals more than once.
The second volume-seller in Alfa’s “brand pillar” range will be a compact SUV available worldwide. Along with the Giulia, it is expected to contribute greatly to the carmaker’s goal of reaching 400,000 units by 2014 – quite a leap from the 155,000 sales expected this year.
The compact SUV, which will be built in Italy and compete with the likes of the VW Tiguan and Ford Kuga, promises to combine the typical attributes expected in this category with "true Alfa Romeo" styling, handling and performance.
Fans of the brand will be glad to hear that Alfa will launch the first mass-produced rear-wheel drive model since the 75 (sold in America as the Milano) gave its place to the FWD 155 in 1992. The as-of-yet unnamed sedan will be the brand’s luxury flagship model and will most likely share its platform with the Chrysler 300. Apart from being RWD, Alfa has also revealed that it will be powered by a V6 engine with production set to start in 2014.
Central to Alfa’s plans will be the new, all aluminum, direct injection 1.8-literturbocharged enginethat will be fitted to a wide range of Alfa’s models producing up to 300-horses.
Last, but not least, Alfa Romeo has also revealed plans about its current portfolio. The Brera/Spider duo will be discontinued towards the end of 2011, while the MiTo will get a five-door version in early 2014 and the Giulietta a mid-life facelift the same year.

Former Chrysler CEO Nardelli Says Cerberus Could Have Saved the Automaker

It's been two years since Bob Nardelli stepped down as Chrysler CEO while the company was still owned by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, for which he still works, but the 63-year-old exec still has the hots for the Detroit carmaker.

During an interview with The Detroit News on the sidelines of a recent Dow Jones conference in New York, Nardelli said that the Obama administration didn’t have to give Chrysler away to Fiat as he believes Cerberus could have done a better job of saving the automaker.
Cerberus, which in 2007 acquired Chrysler from Daimler, was ousted by the Obama administrationduring the 2009 bankruptcy and bailout saga. The government then reached a deal with the Fiat Group it a 20 percent stake in Chrysler LLC, which the Italians eventually boosted to 53.5 percent. Both automotive groups are now run under the leadership of Sergio Marchionne.
"If the government gave us the deal they gave Fiat, we'd be doing just fine — really," Nardelli told the Detroit daily. "There was no reason for them to give Chrysler away," the former Chrysler CEO added.

He even goes as far as accusing the government that its actions during the massive bailoutwere “all theater and no substance” and that instead of Fiat, Cerberus should get most of the credit for turning Chrysler around:
"The fact is, we kept (Chrysler) alive when it could have gone down the tubes. This will sound defensive, but I think we did everything we could," said Nardelli.
Nardelli added that Cerberus cut $5 billion in annual costs from Chrysler's bottom line while it owned the company.
"We ended up furloughing unfortunately 35,000 families, closed factories, got rid of non-earning assets, shut down some platforms. I think Chrysler is where it is because of what we were able to do," he said.
Nardelli also noted that most of the well-received products that Chrysler is now selling, like theJeep Grand Cherokee, the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger, “were in the pipeline when Cerberus was running the company”.
One has to wonder: is it sour grapes or did the Obama administration get rid of the old regime because, as Nardelli claims, it was a readily-available scapegoat? Have your say in the comments section below.

Alfa Romeo Announces New 1.8-liter Turbo Engine with up to 300HP, Production Starts in 2013

The Fiat Group has revealed plans to produce a new four-cylinder gasoline direct injection turbo engine for Alfa Romeo at the firm's FMA plant in Pratola Serra beginning in early 2013.

The Italian company said that the all-aluminum powerplant has a displacement of 1.8-liters and will feature advanced technologies such as a 200-bar gasoline direct injection system, dual variable timing and a high-efficiency turbocharger. It will be offered in numerous versions the most powerful of which will develop 300-horses.
While the Fiat Group did not give out any details about the models scheduled to get the new engine, it did say that it has been designed for use in both transversal and longitudinal applications and that it will be compliant with future emissions standards in both Europe (Euro 6) and the U.S. (Tier 2 Bin 5).

The upcoming 4C sports coupe and the delayed Giulia premium sedan that will replace the current 159 will most likely be the first cars to get the new powerplant.
“This is an extremely important step for Alfa Romeo, as we continue to reposition our brand and prepare it for global distribution. The United States remains our primary objective as we prepare for a 2013 introduction of our models,” said Harald J. Wester, Fiat’s Chief Technology Officer and head of the Alfa Romeo and Maserati Brands.
“The dedication of Group-wide resources to develop specific powertrain solutions for the specific needs of Alfa Romeo is a reflection of the renewed thrust we are placing on the development of this brand. This is a first step in a series of initiatives to be implemented in the near future which will reconnect Alfa Romeo to its historical roots as a premium Italian sports car brand,” he added.

New Chrysler Ypsilon Supermini Makes its Debut in Britain [50 Photos]

The Fiat-Chrysler alliance has said that the two groups will work hand-in-hand towards the development of all future models, with the Italian branch handling the smaller and compact / medium segments and the American, the medium and larger categories.

We'll have to wait to see the first (real) results, but for the time being, the group is making use of one brand's vehicles to supplement the lineup of another brand through the age-old approach of rebadging.
Following the European premieres of the Chrysler 200, 300 and Town & Country with Lancia badges and names, the table has turned around with Chrysler welcoming a Lancia model into its range, the new Ypsilon supermini. But it's not for U.S. consumption.

As you may remember from previous posts, the Fiat-Chrysler alliance has decided to market all Lancia models under the Chrysler brand in the United Kingdom.
Besides the Chrysler-specific grille and badging inside and out, there are no other changes to the Ypsilon, which is being marketed as a more premium proposal in the Ford Fiesta category.
The 3.8-meter-long five-door model with the hidden rear door handles launches in the UK with a choice of two petrol engines and a single diesel option, all equipped with a Start&Stop system as standard.

The gasoline range includes a 1.2-liter Fire four-cylinder unit producing 69HP and 102Nm of peak torque with CO2 emissions of 115g/km, and Fiat's award winning (2011 International Engine of the Year) two-cylinder 0.9-liter TwinAir that pushes out 85HP and 145Nm of torque with CO2 emissions of 97g/km.
The most powerful choice is the 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbo-diesel with 95bhp and 200Nm of torque at 1500rpm.
All engines are paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the 0.9-liter TwinAir can be optionally specified with a semi-automatic five-speed transmission.
The Chrysler Ypsilon is on sale now in the UK with OTR prices starting from £10,695 (for full details, click the image above).

Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 Diesel

Fiat first came to India and gave us one of the first forms of what we recognise as privately owned affordable cars, the Premiere Padmini(to know more click here), which continue to crowd streets all over the country to this day. They had plans when they tried a resurrection with the Uno too. Yes, they had plans when that fizzled out and they tried yet again with the Palio and Sienna in the 90s. Now they have a plan to give a Punto the first facelift after its June 2009 launch. but this time, it might just work!
One look at the Punto will assure you that Italians are indeed great at design. The Punto’s silhouette is well balanced, whichever angle you look at it. The big lights up front and the long nose look sporty and give it plenty of character. The rear gets compact lights mounted high up on the pillars. And the big wheels complete the purposeful stance. Well, Fiat owns Ferrari and Maserati; easy to understand once you look at the Grande Punto’s design. Fiat’s 2009 launched hatchback looks stunning from the outside. The long nose wouldn’t be out of place on a Maserati and the compact rear with those angled, high-mounted lights gives the Fiat hatch a sporty look. In the half-light, the dash looks quite attractive with the glow from the chrome-ringed dials. The doors shut with a weighty thud you only get in European cars. You feel nicely cocooned from the outside elements and insulation from the road is pretty good.
Yet, it retains a certain individuality that can only be Italian, in fact, it can only be Fiat. Change the logo on the grille from the red Fiat logo to anything else and it will be completely out of place. The grille itself is a continuation of the theme set by Fiat designs in the recent past – a rectangular mesh that seems to be divided horizontally through the centre by a solid portion that also holds the registration plate – exactly the way it is in the Linea.
Engine
2007 Fiat Grande Punto wallpaper image

The Grande Punto uses the similar 1.3 multijet engine that is doing duty in the Ritz, Swift, Vista and Stile. But the Punto weighs a substantial 115kg more than the Marutis. Punto also has shorter gearing and this has sacrificed the top-end performance for better drivability.
In traffic, there’s adequate power and the Grande Punto feels quite eager in town. The shorter gearing also makes the engine work harder at higher speeds. It’ll hit 100kph in 17.84sec, which is mainly because of its 1190kg weight and ECU tuning.
The gearshift is quite light too but nowhere near as slick as the Fabia’s. However, the instant you want to make urgent progress, the diesel Grande Punto lacks sparkle. The initial turbo-lag is very much there but even after the turbo starts spinning, the strong tug or spike in the powerband, is missing. In fact, the motor feels strained when revved hard.
The in-gear timing is pretty good; especially the 40-100kph slog in fourth gear and the Grande Punto matches the lighter Swift.
Fiat has understood the importance of fuel economy the hard way after the first Palios, and the latest Fiats have all proved to be pretty frugal; the Grande Puntos are no exception. The diesel Punto gives a terrific 13.7kpl in the city and 17.5kpl on the highway.

2007 Fiat Grande Punto wallpaper image

There’s little doubt about Punto’s ride and handling prowess. It’s the car you can enjoy most, thanks to a beautifully balanced chassis, fantastic grip, accurate steering and perfect damping. Over any surface at any speed, the Punto remains unfazed and the refined suspension simply goes about its job keeping you completely isolated from the crater you just drove through.
The Grande Punto drives over the broken roads with utter nonchalance. Nothing seems to faze the Fiat as it effortlessly skips and splashes over potholed tarmac. Key to the Grande Punto’s terrific poise, especially over rough roads, are the large 195/60 R15 tyres, stiff chassis and absorbent suspension with a perfect spring and damper set-up. With its suspension raised for India, the Grande Punto does roll a bit into corners but this detracts little from the driving experience.
The superbly weighted and accurate hydraulic steering gives you an almost rally-car-like feel. What’s also special is the flat and consistent manner in which the suspension works. There’s none of the nose-heaviness or heaving that plagues most front-wheel-drive hatchbacks.

Quite simply, at highway speeds nothing comes close to the Punto. The suspension is amazingly quiet but it misses the low-speed suppleness of the Fabia, its only true rival in the ride and handling department.
When it comes to ride and handling, it’s the Punto that wins hands down. It’s beautifully styled and a number of people will buy it just for this virtue. Still, its average interiors, dull performance and relatively tight-on-space rear seats are deterrents to what is otherwise a brilliant car.
The Grande Punto is the car that saved Fiat’s hide. It took the European car market by storm as soon as it was launched in 2005 and gave Fiat a platform from which to launch its recovery. The Punto looks superb, it is solidly built and comes with class-topping ride and handling.
Performance, fuel efficiency and refinement are not the class best and even the interiors left us disappointed. The Grande Punto makes up with the value it offers. With the base 1.3 version starting at around Rs 6.24 lakh (On-road price, Bangalore)and the fully-loaded diesel 90HP cost Rs 8.22 lakh (On-road price, Bangalore), it may not be the cheapest hatch around but to take a line from partner Tata, the Grande Punto is a lot of car per car and pretty good value for money.
The company has also announced to set up its own distribution network and will continue selling through Tata dealers. With new products and a more dedicated dealer network Fiat could see higher numbers in India.

Fiat -Panda Mini

mi

The successor of the current version of Fiat Company’s Panda City car will soon be coming out of the its production line in Italy this November. The third generation of the Panda is supposed to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.
Company sources claim that the new plant where production of this car is about to begin will be a truly advanced plant. The Fiat Group’s CEO said last year that this plant, the Pomigliano d’Arco will roll out models of this version of Panda in order to boost sales in Italy. The production numbers were recorded as 650,000 in 2010 to almost 1.4million models in 2014.
This decision for shifting the factory from Poland to Italy was triggered after Fiat SpA workers gave support to a reorganization plan to boost its output by around 70 percent, this would be attained by switching to a 3 shift, 280 days working year in comparison to the existing 2 shift and a 235days working year. The company’s CEO made it clear to the workers that if they did not concur to this working model the company would shift its plant to Serbia.
