Hyundai Announces New 1.6-liter Turbo Gasoline and Euro6 2.0 Diesel Engines

They have been a long time in the making but the Hyundai Motor Group finally presented its highly anticipated Gamma 1.6 T-GDI petrol and Euro6 R-2.0 diesel engines today.
The presentation was made during ‘The 11thHyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference’ that takes place on October 19 and 20 at the Rolling Hills Hotel, located near the Hyundai-Kia Motors R&D Center in Korea.
The new member of Hyundai's Gama family of gasoline engines is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder unit that uses a twin-scroll turbocharger along with an air guided intercooler, direct fuel injection system and dual CVVT, to produce a maximum output of 204-horses at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 27.0 kgf.m (265Nm or 195 lb-ft) at 1,750 rpm. These numbers will slightly differ depending on the market.
This engine meets California’s stringent ULEV-2 (Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle) standard as well as Euro 5 standards, and it will be used on a variety of Hyundai and Kia vehicles including of course, the Veloster sports hatch, which should get it first in mid-2012.
Hyundai said the Gamma 1.6 T-GDI was developed over a period of 52 months and cost 69.5 billion won (US$61.4 million / €44.4 million).
At the conference, Hyundai Motor's also showcased its new R-2.0 diesel engine. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit is rated at 150HP and 39.0kgf.m (382Nm or 282 lb-ft) and it complies with the more stringent Euro6 norms. It will also be used across the Hyundai and Kia range including the upcoming Sante Fe successor.

Video: Why Are Three Kids Riding in the Trunk of a Hyundai Genesis?

Cramming three people inside the trunk of a car sounds like a mafia move, or in a less dramatic scenario, something you world normally expect to see in an impoverished third world country.

Yet the video that follows was allegedly filmed in a bustling city in South Korea. And mind you, we're not talking about a poor-man's mode of transportation but the near luxury Hyundai Genesis sedan (if we're not mistaken, that is).
But the worst thing of all is that it looks like the individuals riding inside the trunk are three young kids. What can you say?

Supercharged Hyundai Genesis Coupe Hurricane to Hit SEMA Show

If one thing's for sure, Hyundai will have a strong presence at this year's edition of the SEMA aftermarket show in Las Vegas in November. The South Korean automaker, which has already shown us two Veloster tuning proposals, has now released details on another project, this time based on the Genesis Coupe V6.
The Genesis Coupe Hurricane SC was developed by Hyundai America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) in cooperation with Magnuson Products, Rhys Millen Racing, Harman International and Torvec Inc.
HATCI says it has been working on the modified Genesis Coupe for the past two years with its engineers having enhanced all aspects of the car including the engine, chassis and styling.
The standard Genesis Coupe's 3.8-liter V6 engine benefits from a new supercharger with a liquid to air intercooler developed by HATCI and Manguson, which helps lift output to more than 450 horsepower.
“The HATCI and Magnuson supercharger demonstrates the high-performance potential of Genesis Coupe’s V-6 engine – the car was engineered to handle this kind of extra power,” said David Dutko, senior engineer, HATCI. “Our HATCI engineers have been working for years with Magnuson to ensure high engine output is available on future Hyundai vehicles.”
Other performance modifications include IsoTorque differential, a free flowing exhaust system and air intake, Brembo six piston brake kit with cross drilled front and rear rotors brakes, and new 19-inch Enkei wheels shod in Hankook tires.
Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) provided their expertise on the styling front while the coupe also gets a modified Harman International high level Lexicon audio system.

Almost Half of Hyundai’s U.S. Showrooms to get a New Look

Hyundai’s vice president of sales, Dave Zuchowski, revealed that 231 of the brand’s 570 stand-alone dealerships in the States will invest a combined US$358 million in order to get an all-new look, consistent with the company's global standards, by the end of the year.

“We have not had a big push on consistency of our image and branding of our buildings in the past”, said Zuchowski. “Now that our brand has gained strength, it is a very viable investment for the dealer.”
On the outside, the walls of the buildings will be covered with trim that looks like brushed aluminum with a blue overhang wrapping the dealership. Inside, among other upgrades, showrooms will get new lighting and Hyundai-branded displays.

Dealers will be able to choose from a list of exterior and interior options to renovate their showrooms according to their budget.
Zuchowski said that about 150 more dealerships need renovations, urging them to make the decision now that the interest rates and construction costs are still low.
Will they actually be forced by Hyundai to make those changes? Zuchowski says that so far, dealers are responding in a positive way: “We’re not really getting a lot of resistance. We’re basically saying ‘We’ve invested billions in our product line to provide you with what we think is a world-class product. Take a step back and make sure that we’re as competitive with our buildings, our people and our processes as our products are.”

SEMA Preview: Another Hyundai Veloster gets Ready for the Tuner Treatment

Joining Hyundai’s ARK Performance Veloster Turboat this year’s SEMA Show floors will be yet another specially tuned version of the South Korean maker's sporty hatchback, this one being prepared by digital media distribution company and publisher of Wrecked Magazine, PM Lifestyle.

PM Lifestyle's approach, however, will be different as the company teamed up with the students at Universal Technical Institute (UTI) with the goal of presenting modifications that can be "achieved in real-world garages".
“The Veloster is the perfect platform for enthusiasts looking to make everyday modifications to their vehicles and for students who are learning what it takes to be a mechanic,” said Jayke Milton, Build Coordination, PM Lifestyle.
“It’s fairly simple to bolt equipment on and off the Veloster sub-frame, making it easy for people to make modifications in their own garages. Plus, the three-doors on the Veloster give it a unique look, making it a very exciting, stand-out car," he added.
Among other modifications, the PM Lifestyle Veloster will feature a tuned 1.6-liter engine producing 163-horses, a custom blue paintjob, a carbon-fibre hood and a full aero kit, new wheels and a bespoke leather interior.
Following its premiere at the Las Vegas SEMA show in November, the PM Lifestyle Veloster will go on a three-year tour with UTI, making more than 120 appearances at various autocross and school demonstration events.

New Hyundai Veloster gets Turbocharged for Upcoming SEMA Show

We already know for a fact that Hyundai is planning to launch a more powerful version of its new Veloster sports car fitted with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine delivering 208HP for a 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint time of under 7 seconds (Carscoop has officially confirmed all numbers), with European sales to start in early 2012.
We still don't know when and if this engine will be offered in North America, but those interested in a more hardcore Veloster will have a chance to see plenty of aftermarket options at thisNovember's SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Among the many Veloster proposals that are expected to be displayed in SEMA, is a highly modified model created by Hyundai in partnership with ARK Performance.
The highlight of the tune is the addition of a custom twin-scroll turbocharger that helps lift the 1.6-liter engine's output from 138HP to 210-horses.
Changes will also be made to the car's suspension and brake systems, as well as the exterior with a new paint job, an aero kit and new alloy wheels, and the interior.
We'll bring you more on the Veloster from the SEMA Show on November 1.

Report: Hyundai Will Offer 10-Speed Auto Gearbox from 2014

Can you count to 10? Well done, so doesHyundai, and in particular the Korean company’s engineering team responsible for car transmissions. According to a Bloomberg Newsreport, Hyundai Motor Group president Park Seong Hyon said that 10-speed automatic transmissions will become available in the group’s luxury models from 2014.
Only a few years ago, six-speed automatic gearboxes were available only in top-of-the-line cars. Then the gear count started to increase gradually: first at seven, which seemed like a novelty, and quite recently at eight, which most luxury carmakers rushed to adopt.
Even though it seems like overkill, the reason for the increasing gear count is simple: CAFE, or Corporate Average Fuel Economy, regulations are becoming stricter every year. Downsizing engines is one solution to the problem, but it can only go so far, especially in large luxury models.
Therefore, automakers employed another way to achieve low average consumption and CO2 emissions: gearboxes with as many gears as possible, with the top sets having a very long ratio.
Porsche has even gone as far as introducing the world’s first seven-speed manual gearbox inthe new 911, borrowing many components from the dual-clutch PDK semi-automatic.

Now Hyundai is breaking new ground with the 10-speed auto, which will most likely find its way under the hood of the 2014MY Equus and Genesis saloons.
Something tells us it's only a matter of time before someone else announces an 11-speed auto, making Hyundai’s transmission old news…

Hyundai’s Eon

The wraps are finally off the sub-Santro that Hyundai has been working on for a long time now. It’s called the Eon and it has all the makings of a game changer; after all what Hyundai has in sights is India’s best-selling car - the Maruti Suzuki Alto. Hyundai’s India story began with a hatchback but sales of the ageing Santro have been sliding and though the i10 is doing well, Hyundai lacks a direct rival to the Alto. That’s the task of the Eon.
The styling is definitely going to win over buyers. Hyundai has applied its fluidic design philosophy to good effect with the front end taking cues from the new Verna and i10. The headlamps in fact are more elaborately designed than any Hyundai we have seen to date and the massive front wheelarch adds lots of visual bulk to the nose. The side profile shows a prominent shoulder line that originates from the headlamp, swoops up along the rear window line and melds into the taillamps. The massive taillights that look like they’ve been modelled on Batman’s throwing stars and the overall effect is extremely eye-catching. That it will find favour with a million buyers is without doubt, however to the purist Hyundai does seem to have gone overboard with the styling.

On the engine front Hyundai have finally jumped onto the 3-cylinder bandwagon. The Eon sports a 814cc petrol engine similar to the Santro and i10’s 1.1-litre iRDE four-cylinder with one cylinder lopped off. Peak power is 56PS developed at 5500rpm, 9PS more than the Alto (47PS). Peak torque is 76.5Nm at 4000rpm (Alto, 62Nm). The Alto, kerb weight of 690kg, is however lighter than the Eon by 35kilos.
At 3495mm the Eon is the same length as the Alto. However it is 75mm wider at 1550mm. It’s 35mm taller as well at 1500m. Wheelbase also pips the Alto's by 20mm at 2380mm. In fact the Eon has the longest wheelbase and is the widest car in its class.  There’s a generous 211-litre boot as well.
We drove the top variant, the Sportz, Hyundai’s Chennai test track but there are plans for several variants. The images you see here are the official ones provided by Hyundai. The choice will range from the base model - no aircon or power steering - to the fully loaded Sportz - a stereo with aux/USB, power steering, front power windows and a driver’s airbag, no ABS though.
The interiors employ a smart combination of beige and black plastics and silver accents. The cabin has abundant headroom but lack of leg room in the rear makes it feel a bit cramped. But the Alto is even more cramped in the rear. The seats feel soft but provide good lumbar and decent thigh support. There are plenty of India-specific features like a scooped out storage tray on the top of the dash and one-litre bottle holders in the doors. The Sportz runs 13-inch steel wheels with plastic covers and 155/70 section tyres. We hear that the lower variants will run 12-inch wheels instead.

The Eon is an easy and friendly car to drive. Its steering is light with a consistent feel. The engine has the de rigueur three cylinder thrum and vibration at idle manifests in the juddering gear knob. Things smoothen out once you rev the engine a bit. Low down torque is decent like most small Hyundais and the Eon pulls from 40kmph in fifth without fuss.
The ride is supple and the Eon soaks up minor to moderate bumps well. Hyundai claim an ARAI-certified 21.1kmpl to the Alto K-10’s 20.2kmpl.

The Eon is slated for launch around Diwali. We expect pricing to range from Rs 3.2 to Rs 3.5 lakh, Rs 20,000-odd below the Santro and a similar amount more than the Alto. With the dramatic styling, interiors, adequate space and efficient engine it looks like the Eon could seriously threaten the Alto's reign as the best-selling car in the country.

Hyundai’s Eon

Hyundai’s all-new small car known until now by its codename HA will be called Eon. This baby hatch will compete head-on with the Maruti Alto.
Eon, which means an 'indefinitely long period of time' suggests that this car, which is likely to replace the 13-year old Santro, is slated for a long innings in India too.
This all-new car will be powered by a three-cylinder 800cc engine, expected to develop around 50bhp and as our illustrations show, the new Hyundai scores high in the styling department. It certainly has Hyundai written all over it.
The Eon doesn't share the Santro's tall boy proportions but Interior space is expected to be better than the Alto. The Eon is expected to go on sale this October with a starting price of under Rs 3 lakh.
For more details on the Eon, pick up Autocar India's 12th anniversary issue which goes on sale this week.

Hyundai i20 is now three years old, having debuted at the 2008 Paris Show. Our sources say a facelift with the new family look is being readied and mules have been spotted testing in Europe. We expect Hyundai to reveal an updated car in sync with the fluidic design tenets featuring the current hexagonal grille, just like the sharply re-designed i10.

This is our impression of what the new i20 could look like, neatly blending the definition lines on the bonnet with the new grille, sharper headlamps and sculpted body work. We don’t expect significant changes to the engines since the reception to the car has been bouyant.
Expect Hyundai to pull the covers off the car at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi.

The Santa Fe tasks itself as a luxurious S.U.V. with streamlined lines in the pattern and buttery interiors. Every inch of the Santa Fe patches luxuriousness. Add to that ground breaking applied science, model public presentation and threw out characteristics, and you will have a car thats truly well found. Moral force driving, smooth ride, exact handling, and implausibly quiet insides make the Santa Fe a much yearned for car in India.

Hyundai claims that the Santa Fes craft is inhaled by the center and completed with engineering. True indeed! The Hyundai Santa Fe will be the companies premium offer in India and is a technology display case for the car maker.

The Hyundai Santa Fe luxuriousness S.U.V. is fit with a 2.2 litre (2199cc), four cylinder, DOHC (16Valve), CRDi engine along with an electrically held in Variable geometry Turbocharger. The Variable geometrical Turbocharger gets an additional electronic control that betters engine powerfulness and acceleration while also reducing emissions. The 2.2 CRDi makes 194bhp @ 3800 rpm and 420Nm of torsion between 1800-2500rpm. The powerful and economic engine is coupled with a slick six-speed manual of arms transmission gear box.
The Hyundai Santa Fe comes with all-wheel-drive which comes into activity if the vehicle is going over slippy road surfaces such as now, lax sand or alike such other surfaces that call for better traction. It is preponderantly a front-wheel ride and has a user-selectable 4WD alternative which remains powered on up to a velocity of 40 kmph after which it goes back to being a front-wheel-drive S.U.V.. There will be two-variants of Santa Fe on offer – a two wheeled ride only (4×2) and the four-wheel-drive variant (4×4).
